Got Graffiti? Take a Picture

GraffitiIf your business, building, or sidewalk is tagged, take a picture of the graffiti.  Next, call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000 and file a Crime Report.  They will either send a police officer or take your report by telephone.  Be sure to write down the Crime Report case number. Send the case number and copies of your photos to Sergeant Lee Norton of the Graffiti Strike Force lnorton@pd.sandiego.gov.  Graffiti damage under $400 is a misdemeanor; over $400 is a felony.  If you don=t take a photo before you remove the graffiti, there is no evidence for the police to use.

Four gangs tag in the Morena area B LV13, LV Crips, Varrio Clairemont, and Mission Bay Locos.  300 graffiti teams, as many as two thousand taggers, also operate throughout San Diego.  The Graffiti Strike Force can often identify the tagger from the photos, and the good news is that they are getting convictions each week and sometimes, restitution. For additional information, contact Sergeant Lee Norton at 619-515-2734.

To have graffiti removed from public areas, contact the Graffiti Hotline at 619-525-8522. If the graffiti is on private property, they will contact the property owner.

Recently the building formerly occupied by Firestone was tagged with graffiti. A few days later, the graffiti was gone.
